Paialoa Fishpond, Moloka'i

Description

Reefs extend into the ocean in front of Kupeke Fishpond on Moloka'i. Fishponds like this were used for subsistence gathering, but invasive species, pests, and over-tourism have significantly damaged the ecological balance of many. Fishponds are now the subject of many local conservation efforts to restore the natural ecosystems and preserve these cultural sites for the future.
